PRA is a genetic eye disorder that affects the retina, leading to progressive vision loss and, ultimately, blindness. It is a hereditary condition, meaning it is passed down from the parents to their offspring. Affenpinschers are among the breeds that can be predisposed to PRA.
Symptoms of PRA may include:
- Night blindness (often the first sign)
- Dilated pupils
- Increased reflectivity of the tapetum (the layer behind the retina)
- Decreased visual acuity in daylight
- Loss of vision, leading to blindness over time
While there is currently no cure for PRA, affected dogs can still lead fulfilling lives with proper care and accommodations. Early detection through veterinary examinations and genetic testing can help breeders identify carriers of the PRA gene and make informed breeding decisions to reduce the prevalence of the condition in future generations.
